Hi! I'm a Lilac

posted Mon, 05/19/08

I stopped by Home Depot on the way home from my electronic charting program this afternoon.  Hilda has mentioned made it quite clear a few times that lilacs are her favorite, so I thought it would be a nice present a very good idea to get her a few for the house.

But, Being A Guy, I have NO IDEA what they look like.

And, Being A Guy, I decided to take the Wander Around Looking At All The Green Plants approach to finding said lilac.

No Joy.

After quite a while, I decided to break down and actually ask someone.  The clerk pointed towards the rear of the garden area and sent me off to the shrubbery section.

Again, No Joy.

So, I decided to ask again.  This time, the slack-jawed, mouth-breathing Home Depot apron-wearing guy informed me that he was just there today to water the plants.

Back to the original employee.  She led me back to the shrubbery section, and we started wandering the aisles.  Sensing a pattern, and being concerned that the name of the damned thing could be in some foreign language like Latin or French or even Greek, I asked her if the little signs with sticks actually said 'Lilac' on them.  Being a Guy, I formatted the question much like this:  "So do the signs actually say 'Hi!  I'm a Lilac" on them?"

She started to laugh.  Then she snorted a time or two.  Fortunately, she found a few and I pounced.  They were in the cart in no time.  The clerk wandered off, still laughing.

And yes, the signs said 'Lilac' in plain English.  There weren't even any subtitles.

I continued my wandering.  I picked out a couple of planters that matched ones previously purchased there, some planter dirt, and, Being A Guy, just had to find something I could set on fire.  Tiki Torches!  And Tiki Torch Fuel.  I thought about just using the Blazo I had for the Coleman lantern, but even I could see this could be a bad idea.

Fast forward a few hours - I had the lilacs transplanted into the new planters, and had even transplanted some herbs we already had sitting around.  The tiki torches were fueled, implanted and lit off.  The lawns & garden had been watered, and my uniforms laundered.  Yup, I even got my uniforms today!  And even a schedule for my ride-alongs.

Time to relax.  My new John Straley book, a Tanqueray Rangpur Lime and Tonic, and a Bolivar Churchill, all consumed out on the patio in the calm evening, with some jazz quietly playing from the house.
